The Case for Boring Technology in Small Backend Teams

Boring is a feature

Every new framework promises to save you time. Some do. Most cost more than they save once you factor in the learning curve, the hiring pool, and the 2am debugging session when something breaks and the community is three GitHub issues deep.

On a small team, every hour spent fighting unfamiliar tooling is an hour not spent shipping. I’d rather reach for Postgres and a well-worn framework and save my novelty budget for the parts of the product that actually differentiate us.

Where I do take risks

Novelty earns its place at the edges — a new library for one well-isolated service, a proof of concept, a side project. Just not in the payment path.
